Learning Disabilities: The Neglected Area of Neuropsychology

Abstract:
This presentation examines learning disabilities through a neuropsychological framework, emphasizing its multifactorial and neurobiological foundations. It reviews the historical development of learning disability identification and current educational models, including Response to Intervention (RTI) and discrepancy approaches. Variations in diagnostic criteria across professional organizations are discussed to highlight challenges in consistent identification.
Endophenotypes of LDs will be explored with emphasis on the role of neuropsychological assessment in identifying cognitive weaknesses and guiding targeted intervention is emphasized, along with common comorbidities such as ADHD, ASD, Epilepsy, etc.
Evidence-based remediation strategies are reviewed. The presentation concludes by highlighting the importance of early identification and individualized intervention to improve academic and lifelong outcomes for individuals with learning delays.
Speaker Biography:
Dr. Steven P. Greco is a board-certified neuropsychologist and partner at Neuropsychology Rehabilitation Services/LifeSpan. He has been in private practice for nearly twenty years. In addition to his private practice work, Dr. Greco serves as Clinical Assistant Professor at Rutgers–Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and Seton Hall–Hackensack Medical School. In addition, Dr. Greco is a co-director of training for the American Board of Professional Neuropsychology Postdoctoral Program. Dr. Greco specializes in the assessment, diagnosis, and rehabilitation of a wide range of neuropsychological conditions across the lifespan, including traumatic brain injury, dementia, stroke, brain tumors, ADHD, learning disabilities, autism, seizure disorders, etc.
His clinical experience spans inpatient acute care and outpatient rehabilitation settings, where he has worked extensively with individuals across the lifespan. Dr. Greco administers neuropsychological evaluations, provides cognitive rehabilitation, and contributes to the training and supervision of students and professionals in the field.
Dr. Greco earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Monmouth University and completed his doctoral training in Counseling Psychology at Seton Hall University, graduating Summa Cum Laude. He completed his APA-approved internship at Jersey Shore University Medical Center and became board-certified through the American Board of Professional Neuropsychology in 2014.
Dr. Greco has published and presented nationally with his most recent publication in Applied Neuropsychology on the Advancing diagnostic consistency of the Meyers Neuropsychological Battery (2025). Lastly, Dr. Greco provides extensive supervision and training to high school, college, graduate and post-graduate students. He continues to integrate clinical practice, education, and research within the field of neuropsychology.
